The Oregon Food Bank Network is asking people who received food from a pantry to check their cupboards for recalled boxes of General Mills Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios. General Mills says the boxes being recalled may contain an undeclared allergen – wheat – which could cause adverse health effects for some people. As we close out Hunger Action Month, we’re relieved that the U.S. Congress passed a temporary spending bill to avert a government shutdown. It means 758,000 Oregonians will continue to receive SNAP (food stamps) benefits. However, the problem remains. Congress must pass a budget by December 11 or we will be back in this same quagmire. While negotiating a funding bill involves many complex and politically challenging policy issues, cutting SNAP funding cannot be one of them.
