Fresh Alliance brings nutritious food to our neighbors in need and is a key component of OFB's commitment to increase the nutritional quality of the food we distribute.
Here's how it works:
OFB works closely with local grocers and retailers to pick up donations of nutritious, perishable food, including milk, meat, produce and other dairy products.
The products are nearing the date that they can no longer be sold, but there is still time before they will need to be used.
OFB drivers pick up perishable food donations five days a week on refrigerated trucks.
The food is moved to a temperature-controlled, sanitized facility where it is sorted and inspected by volunteers and often made available to hunger-relief agencies within 24 hours.
The program began as a pilot at Oregon Food Bank in 2001 and is now operating successfully statewide.
Stores across the state that donate to Fresh Alliance include:
Albertsons, Safeway, Fred Meyer, WalMart, Target, QFC, Whole Foods, Lamb’s Thriftway, Red Apple IGA, Rosauers, Cash & Carry, Ray’s ShopSmart and C&K Markets.
There are about 304 stores that donate to the Fresh Alliance program statewide and about 76 stores that donate to Fresh Alliance in the Portland area.
