    Battered sedans pull up at a downtown food pantry in this central Oregon town, bringing mothers, fathers and children.

    The families stream inside. Soon they emerge carrying cardboard boxes full of cereal, canned beans, fresh fruit and day-old bread. Each month, volunteers at the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Crook County food pantry send an average of 373 boxes out the door.

    Food Bank CEO Rachel Bristol said at the ribbon-cutting she has mixed feelings about the charity's expansion, but that Oregon's hunger problem is still severe.

This summer, with a record number of Oregonians receiving public assistance, they expect to be busy. Summer meal providers are also watching Congress for votes on the reauthorization, and possible expansion, of federal nutrition programs.

    There are a "whole lot of people" who visit the Clackamas Service Center "who are like me," said volunteer Anne Stevens. 

    She lost her job in 2008, her unemployment benefits have ended, her husband's wages were reduced by $2 an hour plus he had several furlough days, leaving them with $200 in monthly income after they pay their mortgage, Stevens said.
