At the request of Feeding America, Oregon Food Bank has sent Dee Morasco, OFB’s inventory manager, to Hauppauge, N.Y., to share her expertise with Island Harvest Food Bank as the area recovers from Hurricane Sandy.
Morasco, who lives in Amboy, Wash., has worked at Oregon Food Bank as an inventory specialist for more than a decade.
“We are so proud of Dee,” said Susannah Morgan, OFB’s chief executive officer. “I served in Baton Rouge after Hurricane Katrina and I know how taxing it can be to assist in disaster relief situations. I am grateful that Dee is willing to put in long hours in potentially poor conditions to ensure that hungry folks on Long Island get food assistance. Dee is a living tribute to the true spirit of the Feeding America national network of food banks.”
Island Harvest Food Bank had just implemented a brand new computer inventory system when Hurricane Sandy struck Long Island. Morasco is helping the food bank’s finance and operations staffs with their inventory and warehouse processes and is also helping them make the best use of their new computer system during a time of high need.
“The people here are great, but they are tired,” said Morasco. “They are now out of reaction mode and are working on recovery. They are starting to look toward the future and trying to figure out what the future will look like.”
Oregon Food Bank and Island Harvest Food Bank are both active members of Feeding America, a network of more than 200 food banks nationwide. Morasco will return to the Northwest on Dec. 20.
