This September, Oregon Food Bank and more than 200 Feeding America-affiliated food banks across the nation will unite during Hunger Action Month to encourage individuals, businesses and elected officials to take action to eliminate hunger.

Locally, Oregon Food Bank will participate in two key events in early September during Hunger Action Month to raise awareness of the need for hunger relief and emergency food:

  • To kick off September’s Hunger Action Month, Oregon Food Bank will hold its first-ever offsite food repackaging event in “Portland’s Living Room” – Pioneer Courthouse Square – on September 3 from noon to 1 p.m. During the event, more than 50 volunteers – including community members, elected officials, business supporters and OFB staff – will label and repack more than 13,500 pounds of boxed soup, donated by Pacific Foods. The soup will be distributed to OFB partner agencies and food pantries throughout Oregon and Clark County, Wash. The Pioneer Courthouse Square event is designed to raise awareness of OFB’s important work and encourage our community to join the fight against hunger.
  • To commemorate Hunger Action Month, OFB has also partnered with the Willamette Light Brigade to "Shine a Light on Hunger" by lighting Portland's Morrison Bridge orange (the official color of Hunger Action Month) from September 3-9.

The need for emergency food remains at record high levels across the U.S. – and particularly in Oregon. In an average month, an estimated 270,000 people in Oregon and Clark County, Wash., eat meals from an emergency food box.

“Hunger Action Month is a growing movement in our nation,” said Susannah Morgan, Oregon Food Bank’s CEO. “It’s a powerful way to showcase the critical work that food banks across the country are doing to help our neighbors in need. And it’s a good reminder that ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference by becoming involved with their communities to raise awareness and take action.”
