Oregon Food Bank seeks individuals willing to commit to a regular, weekly, afternoon shift to help OFB’s growing Fresh Alliance program be a rousing success.
Fresh Alliance is a partnership between Oregon Food Bank and local grocery stores. Every week day, OFB truck drivers collect perishable food donations (the kind of nutritious food you find in the refrigerated section of your grocery stores) from retailers. As soon as the food arrives at OFB, volunteers quickly inspect, sort and repackage the food. It’s then ready for hunger-relief agencies to pick up the very next morning.
“The exciting news is this program is growing by leaps and bounds,” says Jeff Horne, OFB’s volunteer services manager. “We’re receiving more food donations from retailers than ever before. But that means we need additional volunteers to process the food for distribution. We especially need volunteers at OFB’s facility in northeast Portland (7900 N.E. 33rd).”
“It’s a friendly environment,” says Mary Davis, a Fresh Alliance volunteer. “And you know you are doing something worthwhile that’s good for the community.”
Fresh Alliance shifts are available 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Fresh Alliance volunteers work in a temperature-controlled (50 degree) room and must be
• 16 years old or older,
• Able to lift 25 pounds and
• Willing to commit to a weekly shift for an ongoing period.
