Gleaners from throughout the state will gather at the State Capitol in Salem, Tuesday, March 12, to celebrate their rich history of 40 years of gleaning in Oregon. Gleaners will also ask state legislators to pass Senate Bill 430 to allow farmers and others to claim a tax deduction for food they donate to gleaners and other hunger-relief groups.

While Oregon’s hunger rate remains high, it’s finally beginning to budge in the right direction – down, according to the Household Food Security in the United States report, released today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In just one day, the 2012 Letter Carriers Food Drive collected 1,334,653 pounds of nonperishable food in Oregon and Clark County, Wash., Oregon Food Bank announced today. In addition, the drive raised $74,459.

Help stamp out hunger! It’s so easy. Simply place a bag of nonperishable food donations by your mailbox on the morning of Saturday, May 12, for the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive. This is the one day of the year that all Americans have the opportunity – with the help of letter carriers – to easily donate food to help hungry families in their community. The “Stamp Out Hunger” effort is the largest single-day food drive in the world. The NALC food drive has collected more than one-billion pounds of food nationally since the food drive’s inception in 1993.

It's not too late to help stamp out hunger! It’s easy. Simply take nonperishable food donations to your local post office.
The goal of the Oregon Food Bank Network is to collect 2 million pounds of food during the letter carriers food. Last year’s NALC Food Drive raised more than 1.7 million pounds of food throughout Oregon and southwest Washington.

For the 30th straight year, state employees stepped up to the plate to raise food and funds equivalent to 3.88-million pounds of food during the Governor’s State Employee’s Food Drive for the Oregon Food Bank Network. That’s enough food to fill almost 100 semi-truck loads.
