    Letter Carriers food drive coming May 11

    Help stamp out hunger. It’s easy. Simply place a bag of nonperishable food donations by your mailbox on the morning of Saturday, May 11, for the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive.

    This is the one day of the year that everyone has the opportunity – with the help of letter carriers – to easily donate food to help families in need in their community.

    Ford donates $100,000 to Oregon Food Bank to address growing problem of childhood hunger

    Ford Motor Company Fund and Oregon Food Bank announced today a grant of $100,000 as part of the Ford Focus on Child Hunger campaign. The donation is one of six grants to food banks across the Pacific Northwest intended to address the growing issue of childhood hunger in this country.

    "There is nothing more heart-wrenching than a child going hungry," said Bess Wills, dealer at Gresham Ford. "We are thankful that Ford Motor Company Fund is taking steps to address this growing problem and Gresham Ford is proud to support this effort.”

    More than a hundred food bankers from every corner of Oregon converged on Salem today to deliver more than a thousand paper plates, each filled with a message from a constituent (see examples above) and to ask legislators to invest in the state’s partnership with the Oregon Food Bank Network through the Oregon Hunger Response Fund.

    “It takes the commitment and resources of all sectors – public, private and nonprofit – to fight hunger in Oregon,” says Susannah Morgan, CEO, Oregon Food Bank.

That one day will include legendary gospel and blues singer Mavis Staples; Grammy Award-winning Taj Mahal; “sacred steel” virtuoso Robert Randolph & the Family Band; and, for the closing act, former Led Zeppelin vocalist and songwriter Robert Plant, presenting the Sensational Space Shifters.

    New documentary calls for "A Place at the Table"

    “A Place at the Table,” a new documentary, tells the powerful stories of families who struggle with hunger, during a limited run in Portland, March 15-21, at the Hollywood Theater, 4122 N.E. Sandy, in Portland. Produced by the makers of “An Inconvenient Truth,” “Waiting for Superman” and “Food, Inc.,” the film challenges assumptions of who is hungry and why.

    Four anti-hunger organizations who work with hunger issues every day – Bread for the World, Farmers Ending Hunger, Partners for a Hunger Free Oregon, and Oregon Food Bank – are hosting the showings and will be available to respond to questions following the Friday and Saturday screenings.  Buy tickets now online.
