Volunteers, Donors Make Stamp Out Hunger a Big Success

May 23, 2014

Letter carriers had a lot to carry on Saturday, May 10, 2014. Not only did they deliver the mail, they also collected food donations for the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The nationwide event is a collaboration of the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Rural Carriers’ Association and food banks. This year the food drive collected 1.1 million pounds of nonperishable food in Oregon and Clark County, Washington. To pull off this successful event, hundreds of volunteers assisted letter carriers in picking up food, loading food into shipping containers and sorting food for distribution.

“It’s part of my life,” says letter carrier Lois Brumfield, about the food drive. “There’s a lot of work but there is so much reward to it. I really watch out for my customers.” Brumfield has been a carrier for 16 years and adds “I can’t imagine what it would be like to not participate in this.”

“A food drive this big will help fill the summer gap. During the school year kids have access to free and reduced price meals at school, in the summer they lose that food source. Many families find themselves needing additional food assistance,” says Susannah Morgan, CEO of Oregon Food Bank.

The National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive wouldn’t be possible without the help of many generous volunteers and sponsors. A big thank you to the following companies and their employees that provided trucking assistance: Fred Meyer, Daimler, ABF, UPS Freight, PC Fruit, Oak Harbor, Maletis, Columbia Distributing, WE Nelson, CEVA, and Pacific Foods. Thank you to Wells Fargo for their continued promotional and volunteer support and the Portland Trail Blazers Make It Better Foundation for their sponsorship of the Adopt-A-Route program.
