Oregon Food Bank's education programs address the root causes of hunger by teaching skills to promote self-sufficiency for people living with low incomes.
Oregon Food Bank partners with Share Our Strength's Cooking Matters™ to offer one-time, two-hour Cooking Matters at the Store tours in partnership with local organizations serving community members with low incomes. The tours are held on-site at local Fred Meyer grocery stores and teach low-income adults how to get the most nutrition for their food dollars. The tours empowers participants with four key food skills:
Host a Cooking Matters at the Store (CMATS) tour
- Reading food labels
- Comparing unit prices
- Finding whole grain foods
- Identifying three ways to purchase produce
Cooking Matters at the Store often ends in the $10 Challenge, an activity where participants use the skills they've just learned to buy a healthy meal for a family of four, for under $10.
Participants take home a booklet with recipes and shopping tips, a reusable grocery bag, and $10 worth of healthy groceries.
Classes are scheduled in advance, in partnership with organizations that recruit participants.

Host a Seed to Supper gardening workshop
Oregon Food Bank and OSU Extension's six-week Seed to Supper basic gardening workshop series is offered in partnership with local organizations serving adults living on low incomes. Seed to Supper teaches beginning gardeners to grow a portion of their own food on a limited budget, with topics ranging from garden planning to planting to harvesting.
Classes can be held at off-site organizations with suitable classroom facilities. On-site gardens are helpful, but not necessary.
Classes are offered on an on-going basis – we are now accepting applications for the 2016 season.
