Volunteer as a member of a team to lead participants in preparing and cooking the week's menu, eating, cleaning up and sharing
tips on cooking, budgeting and more. From shopping for recipe ingredients, to leading classes, to communicating key messages, volunteers make our nutrition education program work.
Time commitment and schedule
Each volunteer commits to a six-week class series using Share our Strength's Cooking Matters
™ curricula. Cooking Matters™ is nationally sponsored by the ConAgra Foods® Foundation and Walmart.
Prior to working with our program, volunteers attend an orientation to see if the opportunity is right for them. They then observe a class session and attend a half-day training. Volunteers are often trained during one season to begin volunteer work in the next season (for example, volunteers trained in summer would begin volunteering in the fall). Classes are held mornings, afternoons and evenings at the same time each week and are two hours per session. We schedule classes on-site at our northeast Portland and Beaverton facilities and at off-site locations throughout the community.
Volunteers are placed based on the following schedule:
- In December for classes between January and March
- In March for classes between April and June
- In June for classes between July and September
- In September for classes between October and December
No volunteers are scheduled mid-season, but potential volunteers are welcome to observe a class at any time.
