Hunger Red Rover: Destroying Hunger Myths

Summary: This team-building activity will teach participants about hunger myths.

Time: 15 to 20 minutes

Age: Fourth grade to adult

Materials: Question and answer sheet for the facilitator

Preparation: None

Group size: 10 to 30

 

Procedure:

1. Divide the class (ideally a class of 20) into two equal lines.

2. Explain that you will ask a series of questions and that the answers will be numbers between one and 10. Have group members discuss each question for 60 seconds and decide on the correct answer. Tell teams to present their answer by asking that many students to step forward from the line.

3. Tell them the correct answer.

4. After finishing the questions, lead a brief discussion about what the students thought about the activity and how their ideas might have changed. See discussion questions below.

1. How many people out of 10 who receive emergency food boxes from the OFB Network are homeless?
Answer: One in 10 people who receive food from OFB are homeless.

2. How many people in 10 who ask OFB network agencies for emergency food live in a house where at least one person is working?
Answer: Almost five in 10 people who ask for emergency food live in a house where at least one adult is working.

3. One in how many people in Oregon asked the OFB Network for emergency food at least one time in the last year?
Answer: One in five people in Oregon asked the OFB Network for emergency food last year.

4. One in how many children in Oregon and Clark County, Wash., eat meals from an emergency food box?
Answer: Almost one in every four children in Oregon and Clark County, Wash., eat meals from emergency food boxes.

5. How many pounds of food can OFB collect and distribute for each dollar donated?
Answer: OFB can collect and distribute five pounds of food each dollar donated through its food distribution program.
