    Personal connections make a difference in getting food delivered to the hungry in Oregon.

    When it comes to feeding the hungry in Oregon, personal relationships and generous spirits can make up for a lack of clout and money.

    Calling upon friendships and connections and jumping the institutional barriers that sometimes separate people of good will, staff with the Oregon Food Bank and Farmers Ending Hunger coordinated a donation of 150,000 pounds of potatoes that otherwise might have been tilled under.

    They did it again. In the fading hours of its fourth day, the Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival announced it had tentatively passed its $1 million fundraising goal for the second time, with $1,114,004 for the Oregon Food Bank, to be exact.

    The classroom fills with laughter and chatter as nine chefs get to business preparing tonight's meal: pasta with green beans, apple raisin salad and peanut butter banana pockets.

    It's a mouth-watering medley of aromas and a delicious combination of entrées.

    This week marked the graduation for students in Cooking Matters, a course taught through the Oregon Food Bank Nutrition Education Program at Reynolds Middle School.

  • Backup Power for Food For Lane County

    Food for Lane County installed a backup generator at the end of April. The Eugene warehouse stores about a half million pounds of food -- about half of it is perishable. The generator will prevent food loss and spoilage in the event of a power outage.

    The massive $178 thousand dollar generator was paid for by donations and grants, including the Michael D. Horowitz Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation. Horowitz, a local school teacher, established the fund to provide food, shelter and clothing to the needy and homeless in Eugene and Springfield.

    Last Thursday, Kitzhaber was at the Oregon Food Bank’s warehouse headquarters in northeast Portland to sign a bill providing a tax credit to farmers for donating crops to hunger programs. A similar program was in place for decades before lapsing in 2011, mostly because the Legislature just lost track of it – the way we now lose track of tons of produce that won’t be sold but could still feed people.

    On Monday, officials with the Oregon Food Bank, Farmers Ending Hunger and others reminded lawmakers that one of their priorities is to put more fresh vegetables and protein into the hands of the hungry so they, too, can eat simply but well.
