One STORIES OF HUNGER JUANITA I'm Juanita. And I have only been here 10 years. I used to come through here on the way from Washington, where we lived for quite awhile, going down to California and I'd come through Bend and say 'Oh isn't this a beautiful place.' And here we are. We're here mainly because both daughters moved here. And you know, when you get old, you say 'better get near the, near the kids'.

When we came here, we never needed food stamps. We never needed help. Because our Social Security took care of us. But the rents have increased and the premiums on our United Health Care – they advertise how marvelous it is on the TV – continue to increase. They raised the rent $30 a month every year where we are. Social Security is still the same, but everything else has gone up.

Two STORIES OF HUNGER So, um, we're on food stamps now. And we don't get that much on food stamps, so we have to come in and, I do things like making my own soy milk. Since 2002 I made my own soy milk. It's a lot cheaper than buying it. But I've been all over town trying to find soy beans, and they are going out of soy beans all over the place.

My husband and I had stuck it through thick and thin. Hard times. Good times. Still sticking through it. Sixty-five years in February.
