Stories of Hunger

As neighbors, we share many of the same hopes and fears. One of the fundamental differences is some of us know where our next meal is coming from and some do not. Many struggle silently and make heart-wrenching decisions that nobody should have to make. These are their voices…

GEMMA The biggest part of our income goes to rent, and it goes up every year. It’s getting really high. We pay rent and sometimes we don’t know how we’re going to get through the month. It’s scary. If I can get some food at the food bank then I have money to pay my other bills. STEVE I became disabled and I get a certain amount of money a month, and food stamps don't go as far as they should, so that's why I'm at the food bank. JESSICA I think the school lunch program is very important and shouldn’t be cut. It makes it so we don’t have to struggle with lunches every day. One thing I try to do is feed my son breakfast before school. He gets the nutrition he needs in the mornings; we figured that out. RICK I think there should be more education with computers. We're in a computer age and I'm behind. If you don't have computer access when you need it, it becomes a real barrier to get ahead. HARRIET If you haven't been on the other side of that picket fence, you've got no clue what we go through. And I've been on the other side of that picket fence. LINDA My biggest fear is being homeless when I'm 65. I'm 58 now, and I've been homeless for at least 15 years. And then I found volunteering and it really helped me change. VICKI Honestly, my dream is to make ends meet. I'm not asking to be wealthy or rich. Just to live comfortably and not have to stress every week, you know?
