Maui Wildfire Recovery: How to Help

Our hearts are with the people of Hawai’i in the wake of catastrophic wildfires in Maui. More than 100 people have lost their lives, with over 300 still missing. Hundreds of structures have been damaged, and the seaside business and tourism hub of Lahaina that was once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom was destroyed. Emergency crews continue to clear out rubble in impacted areas in the hope of finding missing residents.

What are food banks doing to help?

Feeding America network members, the Hawai’i Food Bank and Maui Food Bank, are responding in the aftermath of these swift and destructive wildfires. They continue to assess the status of their own networks of food pantries and meal programs, two of which have sadly been destroyed by the fires. The Maui Food Bank has established distribution sites with food available for people fleeing the fires, as the Hawai’i Food Bank works with their shipping partners to coordinate transportation logistics to get additional food to Maui.

Oregon Food Bank has sent staff to Hawai’i to provide transportation and logistical support in ongoing relief efforts. Our West Coast partner food banks are also helping Feeding America move disaster boxes of ready-to-eat meals, snacks, water and fresh produce — alongside national food industry partners who are actively engaged in discussions with Feeding America on how they can help.

What can I do to help?

If you are in a position to support the recovery efforts, the quickest and most direct way to make a difference is by supporting our friends at the Hawai’i Food Bank and Maui Food Bank.

Community organizations on the ground have also launched the Maui Rapid Response Fund to direct donations and other offers of support to verified local partners. Please limit phone or email requests as organizations coordinate ongoing emergency response efforts.

If you prefer, you can support the Feeding America's Disaster Response Fund to help our partners on the ground in Hawai’i with emergency food and supply distribution.
