Rethink Hunger: Why SNAP Matters in Oregon
Rethink Hunger: Why SNAP Matters in Oregon
Since recording this message, two courts have ruled that the administration must release SNAP Funds. The federal administration has decided to release partial funds. Hunger in Oregon remains an urgent crisis.
This weekend, 750,000+ people across Oregon lost the SNAP benefits they rely on to buy food. The decision by leaders and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to withhold benefits will deepen hunger in every corner of our state. In this video message, Oregon Food Bank President Andrea Williams speaks directly to our community about what this moment means. Hunger in Oregon was not caused by disaster or scarcity. It was created by policy choices that determine who should eat and who should not.
At Oregon Food Bank, we are doing everything we can to move food where it’s needed, but no food bank can replace SNAP. For every meal we provide SNAP provides nine. That’s why we are asking for your help.
How you can take action:
Email your members of Congress and the USDA and urge them to fund SNAP immediately.
Donate today here: Oregon Food Bank buys in bulk and distributes statewide. We can stretch your dollar further. That’s why we are asking for monetary gifts.
Host a fund drive (use the guide on that page for tips and support).
While Oregon Food Bank is not facilitating small food drives, our regional and local partners may be (use the Food Finder link for contact information).
Visit Oregon Food Bank’s Food Finder (in 19 languages) to access food today or support your local food pantry. If you’d like to donate food, like canned goods, check in with your local food pantry to learn if they are accepting food donations and what they need.
Support the Regional Food Banks in the OFB Network.
With your support, we can end hunger for good in Oregon.
