What does the largest SNAP cut in history mean for Oregonians?
What does the largest SNAP cut in history mean for Oregonians?
Congress recently passed the Republican Budget Bill (also known as H.R. 1 or the “One Big Beautiful Bill”), a bill that will go down in history for its cruelty and recklessness. Signed into law on July 4, 2025, this bill cuts SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) by an unprecedented $186 billion over the next 9 years. This is the largest cut to SNAP in history. The bill takes away food, health coverage and other basic needs in order to fund tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy, increase funding to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and increase funding for the military.
The Republican Budget Bill takes away critical food aid from millions of households across the country. An estimated one million children will lose food assistance. Local grocery stores that rely on SNAP dollars will suffer. Thousands of us Oregonians who are already struggling will have to sacrifice even more to make ends meet. We are heartbroken, alongside our Oregon Food Bank community, by this cruel and devastating policy choice.
Specifically, the Republican Budget Bill cuts SNAP by:
excluding many legally present immigrants*;
expanding harmful and ineffective time limits;
freezing future updates to the current benefit amount;
dumping federal costs onto states;
and more.

*Note: Differentiating ”legally present immigrants” is important insofar as the law, but food is a human right — all people deserve access to food regardless of where we are from.
